Unlike other systems, the Pathfinder is not dependent on GPS but instead uses a combination cameras and lasers to find its way and negotiate obstacles.  The software has been developed by Paul Newman (Professor of Information Engineering at the University of Oxford) who EPSRC have funded for more than ten years. A good example of how long term funding pays back with world leading innovation for the UK.
